String Pulling/Pinching

Technical Practice
Pitches can be produced by pulling the string to the side rather than depressing the string with the finger or by pinching the string between the finger and thumb.

Notes
  • The use of this technique allows for a continuous glissando to the highest possible note (past the fingerboard) and is a technique used for bending harmonics.
  • It is also possible to pinch to adjacent strings together which produces a double stop in conjunction with a timbral effect in which the strings produce a buzz as a result of vibrating into each other.
  • String pulling is only effective when performed arco.
  • Pinched strings are extremely muted when performed pizz.
