MICROTONES

The string length of the double bass means that it is particularly well placed to produce notes smaller than the span of a semitone.
A standard system for notating Quarter Tones (1/4) has been established and the typical notations are:

                                1/4 Sharp   &   1/4 Flat                                                                      3/4 sharp    &     3/4 flat

However, the large string length of the double bass allows for 1/8 tones and 1/6 tones to be produced with relative ease in the lower octave of each string.

The example below details the possibilites for the G String, transpose accordingly for other strings.

                                                                        1st Octave: 1/4, 1/6 & 1/8 possible

2nd Octave: 1/4, 1/6 & 1/8 possible to (C) after which only accurate production 1/4 tone are practical
