Percussive Techniques - External Generators
​

This Video demonstrates percussive sounds made with the hands. Sounds produced by external percussive generators will produce similar sounds but will vary in intensity and timbre according to the the construction of the object. These qualities are discussed below. As a general rule, avoid high dynamics and extensive use.

Soft Beaters

Percussive Timbre:

Special Notes: 
  • attack quality corresponds with hardness of material.
Strings struck with Timpani Beaters.
Metallic Objects

Possible Objects: Knitting needles, kitchen utensils
Percussive Timbre: 
sharp/defined
Dynamic Range: pp-ff
Special Notes:
  • Attack quality varies according to material
Soft Objects
Areas available: all
Possible objects: Cloth, cardboard tubes, rubber
Percussive Timbre: muted/variable

Dynamic Range: pp-f
Special Notes: 
  • Attack quality varies according to material, for example, the attack with be more defined when using a leather cloth than a cotton one.
