Hammer On's

Technical Practice
It is possible to percussively 'hammer on' a pitch with either hand in the manner of a guitarist. If both hands are used, lines can be achieved with relative ease.
The fingers are brought down onto the string with sufficient force to activate the note and then held in place to sustain it.

Notes

  1. Various techniques can be combined with hammer on's   including arco, legno, body and percussive techniques     or, any technique involving open strings or techniques that directly relate to the pitch material.

  2. If both hands are used then the bow must be set down.

  3. This technique is directly affected by string height and is at its most effective when the bass has a low action.

  4. Bitones can be hammered on behind the right hand when pitches are stopped.

  5. Pitches hammered on in the lower register of each string will naturally produce a Bitone, the amplitude of which will vary accorings to pitch and set up.
