PIZZICATO MULTIPHONICS
Technical Practice
Pizzicato multiphonics are relatively easy to produce. The technique involves placing the left hand finger on a node point (the 3rd-8th partials of the harmonic series are most effective) and plucking vigorously, close to the bridge. The resultant sound in each case is somewhat variable but when performed correctly produces a multiphonic sound which comprises the fingered harmonic, the fundamental and, to a lesser extent, other parts of the harmonic series.
They are also possible to produce in the same way as left hand pizzicato harmonics but using less pressure from the thumb and a greater force from the plucking finger.
